I left the house with a snorkle
There's so much life in the coral
That I was ready to see....

and dig my toes in the white sand
I think there's no one around and

He said

Welcome to Costa Rica

Would you like to rent an umbrella

I know I looked like a tourist
But I lived there, I teach English
So I replied in his tongue

Soy tu vecina

Y ya me conoces

With a very earnest face

They really hurt to step on

He said they make some good eating
But that their spikes could be poison
Be careful walking the beach

Though I'm a woman of logic
I pictured hedgehogs on beach towels
They rented an umbrella

Those Hedgehogs
Poison Hedgehogs
Their beachballs would deflate

Do hedgehogs
even live here
or are they on vacation?

He left me doubting my Spanish
I shook it off just to start fresh
Returned my sights to the sea

I donned my flippers and snorkle
and as my face broke the surface
There were hedgehogs surrounding me....

Unbeknownst to me
